Early records from the 1400s show that the original Tudor Merchants Hall, then the Cloth hall and fish market, was originally located at St Michael’s Square, not far from its current location. You can see the original position marked on the map in red. In 1634 the building was bought by Alderman Edward Exton and moved to its current position by Westgate.
Westgate is a very historical location in English history. It is the gate through which troops left for victory at the Battle of Agincourt.

In the 1980s an archaeological dig of St Michael’s Square discovered that the original position of the building was at an angle to the Square, and part of it was on land covered by later extensions to the church. > See more about the structure
