Other market halls

The Tudor Merchant Hall is not the only surviving medieval arcade hall. The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum has many medieval buildings and a medieval arcade hall which you can investigate inside. The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum is not far from Southampton.

Unlike the modern building the original structure was a freestanding arcade. The timber frame is oak and many of the surviving beams are original. The roof is not original and replaces a clay tiles with crenolated ridge tiles.

When the building was moved in the 1600s it was in such a poor condition that it had to leant against the walls for support. The two open arcade sides were filled in with stone to create a warehouse.
